Circassian Beauties were supposedly the women of the Circassian people who lived in the Caucasus mountains. They were allegedly very beautiful and highly desired as as concubines and slaves in Harems of the Ottoman empire.
 
This was just a gaff. In reality, they were beautiful young women who wore a teased hairstyle. First exhibited by P. T. Barnum at his American Museum in 1864, Circassian Beauties quickly became a staple of the dime museums. They often performed as sword swallowers or acrobats, and had exotic names, usually containing the letter Z.
